But if your team is made up of multiple different disciplines who, combined, would generate the full-stack data scientist, why not also allow in statisticians whose failings would be caught by everyone else? They would still bring a deep and less focused understanding of stats that other team members might lack.

I'm all for bringing in statisticians. Heaven knows they are much cheaper than data scientists!

Seriously, teams really do need statistical expertise and I'd be the last to argue against that. Digital analytics has really suffered from a widespread lack of statistical knowledge. It's more the statistician as data scientist that I'd caution against. That particular beast is a little too rare and expensive to be practical.
